Things You Should Know About Stretch Marks
Posted on May 1, 2009 in PeopleEverybody or almost everybody likes to look good and also goes that extra mile to achieve that beauty. When you talk about beauty, skin is one of the first things that comes to your mind. A beautiful skin most often, means overall health of the person in terms of physical, mental as well as emotional terms.
Stretch marks often become a major factor of embarrassment for people who have them. You can have them on your arms, underarms, legs, thighs, and most commonly on your tummy. These marks are not pleasant to look at.
Now, both men as well as women can get these marks. Anybody who undergoes a drastic weight fluctuation is likely to get stretch marks, whether you are man or a woman. People who gained excessive amount of weight in a short period or who lose a great amount in a short period are both prone to stretch marks.
Nevertheless, women are more concerned owing to the pressure of looking good at all times. Most often, post pregnancy, women develop these marks. What happens is that the skin gets stretched during pregnancy.
If the skin is not elastic enough, then after a while, it will not be able to take the stretching for long. As a result, the collagen as well as elastin fibers break, causing the stretch marks to appear. In the beginning, they are pinkish in appearance and later on become silvery or white.
These marks are initially quite prominent and it takes some time before they can become less visible.
Stretch marks can be quite a cause of concern for several women, while some women might accept these marks as their own.
There are quite a few things you can do about these marks and to remove them. First, you can take care to keep your skin as much moisturised and hydrated as possible to avoid these marks in the first place. You can even apply certain creams or lotions that avoid the appearance of stretch marks. However, you should always consult your doctor before doing anything like that during pregnancy.
Then you have the effective treatments such as plastic surgery or laser surgery. Both of these treatments are quite expensive and it would help if you take care to prevent these marks by making your skin stronger and more elastic.
On the other hand, if you can wait that much then you can even wait for these marks to grow lighter with time.
