However if the home is older and it hasn’t been painted in a while, you may need to do the interior and the exterior.  Painting the interior walls light and neutral will make it look brighter.  Also if the paint is peeling on the outside and you have wood siding, sand the area and then apply the new paint.  It can make your house look new and add thousands of dollars to the value.  This goes for the framing around the windows, porches and railing alike.  Although depending on the size of your house and how much money you are planning on spending, having vinyl siding installed may be better in the long run and it is low maintenance.  No more painting.  It comes in many different colors and they can also do the trim around the windows, porch railing and posts.

Inside if your cabinets are older instead of replacing them, sand them down and add a coat of paint.  It will bring the cabinets back to life. Again pick light neutral colors, it will brighten the room and sometimes make them look larger.

If your carpet is an area your are considering for an improvement project, a good carpet cleaning may be all you need to do.  However, if they are outdated, torn, stained and no cleaning will help, rip it out.  You may luck out and have some nice hard wood flooring underneath that ratty carpet.  If you do sanding and refinishing the floors can give you home a whole new look and add value to the home.  If you don’t have good hard wood floors underneath, you can buy some good grades of carpet and it not cost you an arm and a leg.

As always, adding landscaping to a home definitely improves the appeal.  You can buy some hedges and small flowering plants to put around the outside of the home to improve the look.  Also on porches and decks, hanging plants or flower pots also add a nice look.   Although landscaping is not going to add thousands of dollars to the value of your house, it does help if you are thinking about putting it on the market.  Some times, how you present your house is just as valuable as any improvement you make to it.
